Tips for Doing a Fashion Updo Hairstyle with Your Long Hair

Updos are easy to create yourself at home even if you have long hair. They are a good for the summer time to keep your hair off of your neck and shoulders or just to get it out of your way, and for formal settings and fancy dinners. A simple updo can be modified to work for a casual setting as well depending on a few variations. A more casual look is achieved best with wavy hair and a sleek formal one goes best with straight hair.

1. Pull all of your hair up high on your head and secure with a small hair elastic. If you have a lot of short layers on the top of your head, you will need to run some mousse along the sides and the top and secure with bobby pins if necessary, as you pull it into your ponytail. For a more formal look, gather it very high on the top of your head.
2. Twist the pony tail you have made into a bun that lays against your head and hides the hair elastic. Secure against your head with bobby pins around the outside of the bun and anywhere that appears to be loose.
3. Spray with hairspray to eliminate any frizz if you are going for a more sleek, formal updo. If you are trying to achieve a more casual or romantic look, pull your bangs out and some pieces on the sides and around the nape of your neck to frame your face.
4. Slide in a headband that goes with your outfit or use some decorative barrettes for the finishing touches. This step, of course, is optional.
